Christian Venier, a free spirit of the vibrant Loire
Cheverny, Cour-Cheverny and a return to unadorned viticulture
Located in Candé-sur-Beuvron, between Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny, Christian Venier is one of the winemakers who have profoundly marked the history of natural wines in the Loire. A former student of the Beaune wine school, he then worked at Romanée-Conti before choosing in the early 1990s to return to his family's land to develop a radically different approach to conventional viticulture.
The estate covers approximately 15 hectares, cultivated with organic farming methods since its beginnings, with extreme attention paid to soil life and the natural balance of the vines. Christian Venier mainly works with the historical grape varieties of the region: Romorantin, the emblematic grape variety of Cour-Cheverny, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Côt and a few other Loire varieties.
Vibrant, direct, and profoundly sincere wines
In the cellar, the philosophy has remained the same for over thirty years: letting the grapes express themselves fully, with as little intervention as possible. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, vinifications without additives or with extremely limited sulfur depending on the vintage, and aging prioritizes the wine's freedom rather than technical control.
Christian Venier's wines are often characterized by a great sense of movement: vibrant juices, sometimes unsettling in their youth, but always driven by a very singular energy. The Romorantin finds a particularly free, taut, and deep expression here, while the reds prioritize freshness, fruit, and drinkability.
