Jean-Claude Rateau

A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy

From family roots to a visionary wine estate

Renowned winemaker Jean-Claude Rateau began his winegrowing adventure in 1979 in Burgundy, creating his own domaine from a few family vines. In parallel with his viticultural studies, he undertook a tour of France, enriching his know-how.

Early biodynamic conversion, between soil science and respect for life

From the outset, he was influenced by experts such as Claude Bourguignon and Yves Hérody, and became an early adopter of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy. His passion for the environment and sustainable practices led him to cultivate his vines biodynamically and to commit to respectful viticulture, with organic certification (Ecocert).

A mosaic of terroirs, vinified with care

From his modest beginnings of 2 hectares, Jean-Claude Rateau has gradually expanded his estate, reaching today 8 hectares spread over 15 parcels in 12 different terroirs. He makes a point of vinifying each plot individually to preserve the purity and expression of each terroir.

A keeper of Burgundy’s viticultural memory

Jean-Claude is also renowned for his expertise and passion for viticulture. He is known for his captivating talks on the history of Burgundy vines and grape varieties, demonstrating his deep respect for winegrowing tradition.

Living wines, true to Burgundy’s soul

Today, the Domaine Rateau offers a complete range of white and red wines, offering fine, expressive cuvées that are representative of Burgundy. Jean-Claude Rateau remains a committed winemaker, combining tradition and innovation to produce wines of remarkable quality.
