Domaine des Pothiers

Domaine des Pothiers, the Côte Roannaise in relief

Villemontais, Gamay Saint-Romain and granites of the Massif Central

Located in Villemontais, in the southern part of the Côte Roannaise appellation, Domaine des Pothiers is a very old family estate, whose history dates back to the early 17th century. Now run by Romain Paire, alongside his family, the estate has approximately 22 to 23 hectares of vines, integrated into a farm that also maintains mixed farming and livestock activities.

Here, everything revolves around Gamay Saint-Romain, the emblematic local grape variety of the Côte Roannaise, planted on granitic soils, often sandy and draining, at altitudes that give the wines their natural freshness. The estate also produces some whites, notably from Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, but it is Gamay that carries the deep identity of the place.

Organic, biodynamic and straightforward, fresh, deeply digestible wines

Since Romain Paire joined the estate in 2005, the vineyard has been progressively modernized and oriented towards a more vibrant viticulture. The vines are now managed using organic farming and biodynamics, with Biodyvin certification, in an approach attentive to the soils, natural balances and the just ripeness of the grapes.

In the cellar, winemaking seeks to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroirs: fermentations with indigenous yeasts, gentle extractions, aging in concrete tanks, old barrels, large wooden containers or amphorae depending on the cuvées. The wines of Domaine des Pothiers are distinguished by their energy, their spicy freshness and their fine texture, with this very Ligurian signature: fruit, tension, and a true ability to remain deeply drinkable without losing complexity.
