Jean Maupertuis

Jean Maupertuis, Volcanic Auvergne in its Freest Form

Puy-de-Dôme, Old Vines, and an Independent Spirit

Based in Saint-Georges-sur-Allier, in the heart of the Auvergne vineyards, Jean Maupertuis is a prominent figure in the revival of natural wines in Auvergne. After a career far from wine, he settled down in the early 90s with the desire to work old vines on the volcanic soils of Puy-de-Dôme.

The estate now covers a few hectares cultivated organically, with a strong focus on soils and natural balances. The plots, often located on basaltic and volcanic soils, give the wines that smoky tension and very particular energy found in the great wines of Auvergne.

Unadorned Wines, Between Fruit and Volcanic Tension

In the cellar, Jean Maupertuis follows a clear philosophy: fermentations with indigenous yeasts, very little or no sulfur depending on the cuvée, precise aging, and minimal intervention to allow the wine to evolve freely. Gamay d’Auvergne plays a central role on the estate, often worked with gentle macerations to preserve all the freshness and brilliance of the fruit.

Jean Maupertuis' wines are distinguished by their fluidity, their energy, and that almost stony sensation unique to volcanic terroirs. Digestible, vibrant, sometimes slightly smoky reds that perfectly capture the living and untamed character of Auvergne.
