Cascina Lieto
Cascina Lieto, Rie and Hiroto Sasaki's Free Piedmont
Castiglione Tinella, between Langhe and Asti
Founded in 2018 by Rie and Hiroto Sasaki, Cascina Lieto is a small estate located in Castiglione Tinella, in Piedmont, on the border between Langhe and the Asti region. Originally from Japan, Rie and Hiroto have lived in Italy for many years; Hiroto first worked in the export of Italian wines and artisanal products before settling in the Piedmontese hills to create his own wines.
The estate was established around an old farm and a small plot of vines over 55 years old, in an area of high and steep hills historically linked to Moscato. Production remains very limited, around 4,000 bottles according to sources, with the aim of gradually growing without losing this artisanal scale.
Living Wines, Macerations, and Patience in the Bottle
Cascina Lieto works with a low-intervention approach, with winemaking techniques that aim to let the ripeness of the grapes, natural acidity, and the identity of the place speak for themselves. The wines, often unique for the region, are not built around the classic prestige of Nebbiolo, but rather on freedom of style: macerated whites, concentrated yet drinkable reds, deep and very personal aromatic profiles.
All wines spend a minimum of two years in bottle before release, a rare choice for a small estate, which allows the materials to settle and gain balance. The Cascina Lieto cuvées are distinguished by their aromatic complexity, density, and astonishing drinkability despite their concentration. A unique Piedmont, free, patient, and deeply soulful.
