Domaine Guiberteau, a benchmark for Saumur's great terroirs

Romain Guiberteau, returning to the family estate

Located in Saint-Just-sur-Dive, south of Saumur, Domaine Guiberteau has been managed by Romain Guiberteau since 1996. Then a law student, he decided to return to the family vineyards and produced his first bottles the following year, supported in his early days by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard. The estate now extends over several communes in the Saumur region, including Brézé, Bizay, Montreuil-Bellay, and Saint-Just-sur-Dive, with some vines over 80 years old. Only two grape varieties are cultivated: Chenin for the whites and Cabernet Franc for the reds.

Brézé and limestone at the heart of the estate

An essential part of Guiberteau's identity is found on the famous Brézé hill, where the family has owned vines since the 1950s. Here, the clay-limestone soils and tuffeau give the Chenins the tension, depth, and saline finish that have become the estate's signature. Other plots, particularly in Bizay and Montreuil-Bellay, allow Romain to work with different expressions of Saumur, in both white and red. The vineyard is managed using organic farming, without herbicides or pesticides, with manual harvests and significant attention paid to soil life.

Unadorned Chenins and Cabernet Francs

In the cellar, Romain Guiberteau continues the work done in the vineyard: fermentations are natural, without added exogenous yeasts, then the wines are aged in tanks, foudres, or barrels depending on the terroirs and cuvées. Wines like Domaine Blanc, Le Bourg, or the Brézé parcel selections show straight, deep, and particularly saline Chenins, while Domaine Rouge or Les Chapaudaises offer a refined and fresh interpretation of Cabernet Franc. Precise and vibrant wines, with a lot of energy and, above all, a real ability to express the different terroirs of Saumur.
