👨🏼‍🌾 Red wine produced by Domaine d'Alussia.

A Pinot Noir from a "lieu-dit" located at the foot of the Corton hill, on stony soils rich in iron and limestone. In 2024, the cuvée comes from a single barrel, with entirely destemmed grapes and bottled without fining or filtration. In the glass, we find red cherry, spices, and an earthier touch, with a round palate, supple tannins, and that mineral freshness that keeps the wine very lively. A serious but not rigid Aloxe-Corton, already very seductive with a little air.

Domaine d’Alussia, a new lease of life in Aloxe-Corton

Alexandra Wilson at the helm since 2024

Located in Aloxe-Corton, at the foot of the hill of Corton, Domaine d’Alussia opened a new chapter in its history in 2024, when Alexandra Wilson took over winemaking and vineyard management. The estate was previously known as Mischief & Mayhem, founded by Michael and Fiona Ragg. Alexandra, an Australian winemaker who previously worked with Jane Eyre and Benjamin Leroux, chose to rename the project Alussia, one of the ancient names for Aloxe-Corton. A new identity that above all accompanies a new way of working, more personal and focused on wines that are finer, livelier, and closer to their terroirs.

One hectare of vines and entirely organic practices

Alussia operates as both an estate and a micro-négociant. The estate owns only one hectare of vines, spread across Aloxe-Corton, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pommard, and Puligny-Montrachet, including some very fine Premier Cru plots. All are certified organic, and the soils are worked with horse-drawn plows. For the négociant side, the philosophy remains the same: grapes are purchased only from growers who are themselves certified organic. This is a way to build a broader range while maintaining real consistency in the quality of the grapes and the work carried out in the vineyard.

Less oak, less sulfur, more room for the wine

Since the 2024 vintage, Alexandra has been evolving the estate's style with a lighter approach to SO₂ and new oak. For the whites, aging is shared between ceramic and wood, with ceramic taking on a significant role to preserve freshness and avoid over-marking the wines. The reds are aged in 228-liter barrels, again with a focus on finesse rather than power. The 2024s thus mark a real break with previous vintages: Burgundies that are more refined, tauter, and sometimes slightly reductive in their youth, with less artifice and more room left for the fruit and the terroir. A young Burgundian project that is moving fast, with a real personality beginning to take shape.

A superb shop offering some truly beautiful natural wines that are off the beaten path. One drawback: the bottles are generally very expensive; it would be nice to expand the range to include more affordable/pleasure wines.

Several sets of specifications correspond to these designations. While sulfites are very often mentioned, rightly accused of causing headaches, many other products can be included in the composition of so-called conventional wines.
Here is an overview of the different specifications for organic, biodynamic and natural products:
The organic farming specifications (AB label) prohibit the use of any synthetic chemicals in the vineyards and winery. However, they do allow for some oenological safeguards during the winemaking process. Sulfites, for example, are permitted up to 100 mg/L for red wines and 150 mg/L for white wines.

In biodynamic winemaking (Demeter or Biodyvin certified), the winemaker not only works without synthetic chemicals but also takes the lunar calendar into account for all their operations. They also use biodynamic preparations (fermented horn manure, silica, herbal teas, etc.) to strengthen the vines. Overall, the winemaker seeks to integrate viticulture into a holistic environment. Sulfite levels can reach up to 70 mg/L for red wines and 90 mg/L for white wines.

In natural winemaking (Vin Méthode Nature label), the specifications require the use of organic grapes, fermenting naturally with indigenous yeasts (as in biodynamic winemaking). Natural wines receive no additives during the entire vinification and aging process. Only minimal doses of SO2 are permitted (30 mg/L maximum), and these must be declared by the winemaker. No harsh filtration or alteration techniques are allowed.

We are committed to offering you wines from artisan producers, from small, often family-run estates. That's why we take the time to travel across France, from vineyard to vineyard, in search of those natural wines that truly resonate with us.
We are particularly keen to introduce you to the new winemakers of tomorrow who work tirelessly to offer us magnificent wines.
