Alex Martin
Alex Martin, the new generation of Saumur
Montreuil-Bellay, a return to family vineyards
Based in Montreuil-Bellay, Alex Martin embodies one of the most promising young figures in the Saumur vineyard. After several years of training with renowned estates, including Domaine Bobinet, Thierry Michon in Vendée, and Clos Rougeard, where he held the position of assistant vineyard manager, in 2023 he decided to launch his own estate by taking over the family vineyards.
The family vineyard spans about twenty hectares, but Alex chose to start with a selection of only 2.5 to 3 hectares, cultivated using organic farming. His ambition is to gradually develop a human-scale estate, focused on single-parcel cuvées of Chenin and Cabernet Franc, capable of expressing the full diversity of Saumur's limestone and marl terroirs.
Terroir wines, precise and unadorned
In the cellar, Alex Martin favors spontaneous fermentations and long barrel aging, generally between one and two years depending on the cuvées. Each wine is crafted with a low-intervention approach to preserve the personality of the vintage and the expression of the terroir.
From his first vintage, Alex Martin's wines impress with their precision, tension, and depth. His Chenin La Butte des Rochettes perfectly illustrates this philosophy, with a chiseled, mineral, and elegant style. A young signature from Saumur that is already establishing itself as one of the most promising estates of its generation.
