Jean-Claude Rateau, originally from a family of winegrowers in Burgundy, created his wine estate in 1979 from a few family vines, after having studied at the wine high school and especially after having acquired experience by undertaking a Tour of France winegrowers. He gradually expanded his estate until he cultivates 8 hectares of vines today. From the beginning, he was committed to environmentally friendly viticulture, actively participating in its promotion at the local and regional level, collaborating with researchers like Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, recognized soil microbiologists. Passionate about terroir concepts, Jean-Claude Rateau vinifies each of his 15 plots, located in 12 different terroirs. Its objective is to produce expressive wines that offer immediate pleasure upon bottling. His estate has been certified biodynamic for 30 years and is also certified organic. He produces great Burgundy wines in the Beaune and Beaune Premier Cru appellations, using traditional grape varieties such as Chardonnay for the whites and Pinot Noir for the reds. His early commitment to biodynamics made him a pioneer in the region. He pays particular attention to the preservation of the vine and its environment, practicing biodynamic viticulture without the use of synthetic products. In the vat room, he adopts a “natural wine” approach, using only very small quantities of sulfur during bottling. Its wines are renowned for their lively character, their freshness, their finesse and their delicacy, fully expressing the terroir of Burgundy. Jean-Claude Rateau is an atypical and respected winemaker in Côte de Beaune. He is one of the first defenders of biodynamics in Burgundy and a faithful and respected representative of the Beaune appellation for many years. His wines are alive, and bear the imprint of a man deeply attached to the vine and its environment.
