Franz Strohmeier

Franz Strohmeier, Styria's winemaking philosophy

West Styria, radical biodynamics and the expression of life

Franz Strohmeier is an emblematic figure in the Austrian Styrian (Steiermark) vineyards, often nicknamed the “Green Heart” of Austria. Located on the steep slopes around Lestein, he cultivates his 8 hectares of vines with a deeply philosophical and naturalistic vision of wine: here, the vine is approached as a living organism in its own right, to be respected and observed rather than controlled in a conventional way.

Strohmeier cultivates a wide diversity of local and international grape varieties — from Blauer Wildbacher (a regional red grape) to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay or Muskateller — and seeks to express the terroir with maximum authenticity. His approach results in biodiversity restoration in the vineyards, practices that promote soil life, and spontaneous fermentations without additives. He is known for encouraging all forms of life in his plots, believing that biodiversity is the best guarantee of vineyard health.

In the cellar, the approach is minimalist: limited interventions, simple vinifications, and aging that respects the nature of the grape and the soil. Strohmeier's wines — whether white, red, rosé, or sparkling — are imbued with a natural freshness, vibrant energy, and a deep sense of the Styrian terroir. They embody a viticulture that goes beyond wine to become a philosophy of respect for life.
