👨🏼🌾 White wine made by Robert Denogent.

Les Pommards is a Saint-Véran Chardonnay that focuses more on texture, without losing the tension found throughout the estate's white wines. The clay-limestone soils give the wine a fairly dense and chiseled structure, along with indigenous yeast fermentations and long aging on fine lees, which are hallmarks of the Robert family. You will find notes of pear, ripe citrus, some white flowers, and a hint of almond, with a full-bodied, saline palate and beautiful bitter notes on the finish. A white wine with depth, yet always enough freshness to make you want to come back for more.

The origins of this Mâconnais estate date back to the early 20th century with Andrée Robert, née Denogent, who owned 5 hectares in what would become the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation area in 1936. Her son, Jean-Jacques Robert, took the reins of the estate in 1989 and changed its name to the one we know today as a tribute to his ancestors and family. 2006 was marked by the arrival of the eldest son, Nicolas, while Antoine did not join the estate until 2012, after gaining experience in other French and foreign vineyards. It was in 2015 that the two brothers officially took the helm of the entire estate. Domaine Denogent now covers 13 hectares of Aligoté, Chardonnay, and Gamay (the latter in the Beaujolais region). Although retired, Jean-Jacques, the father, is never far from his sons. The brothers decided to steer the estate in a more natural direction. Their ambition? To craft the most natural wines possible, eliminating all chemical inputs whenever feasible. They focus on the biodiversity of their terroirs (which span around thirty plots spread over more than 30 km between the Beaujolais and Mâconnais regions). They consider this a major asset for their vines, which are between 50 and 70 years old, as it allows them to limit intervention. Only the soil beneath the vines is plowed. All canopy management and harvests are done by hand. As for aging, all the estate’s wines undergo a minimum of two winters; unlike their father, who worked exclusively with barrels, Antoine and Nicolas prefer to vary their approach, using barrels, demi-muids, foudres, as well as concrete, enamel-lined, and stainless steel tanks. They only release their wines when they feel they are truly ready, as they dislike being rushed—neither they nor their wines. Today, the Denogent brothers offer us fresh, vibrant, yet generous wines—wines you want to drink as much with family as with friends. Because if there is one thing that is important to the Denogent family, as anyone who has crossed their path can attest, it is sharing, laughter, and enjoying good times together. And there is no doubt about it: Antoine and Nicolas have crafted some fantastic bottles for just that!

A superb shop offering some truly beautiful natural wines that are off the beaten path. One drawback: the bottles are generally very expensive; it would be nice to expand the range to include more affordable/pleasure wines.

Several sets of specifications correspond to these designations. While sulfites are very often mentioned, rightly accused of causing headaches, many other products can be included in the composition of so-called conventional wines.
Here is an overview of the different specifications for organic, biodynamic and natural products:
The organic farming specifications (AB label) prohibit the use of any synthetic chemicals in the vineyards and winery. However, they do allow for some oenological safeguards during the winemaking process. Sulfites, for example, are permitted up to 100 mg/L for red wines and 150 mg/L for white wines.

In biodynamic winemaking (Demeter or Biodyvin certified), the winemaker not only works without synthetic chemicals but also takes the lunar calendar into account for all their operations. They also use biodynamic preparations (fermented horn manure, silica, herbal teas, etc.) to strengthen the vines. Overall, the winemaker seeks to integrate viticulture into a holistic environment. Sulfite levels can reach up to 70 mg/L for red wines and 90 mg/L for white wines.

In natural winemaking (Vin Méthode Nature label), the specifications require the use of organic grapes, fermenting naturally with indigenous yeasts (as in biodynamic winemaking). Natural wines receive no additives during the entire vinification and aging process. Only minimal doses of SO2 are permitted (30 mg/L maximum), and these must be declared by the winemaker. No harsh filtration or alteration techniques are allowed.

We are committed to offering you wines from artisan producers, from small, often family-run estates. That's why we take the time to travel across France, from vineyard to vineyard, in search of those natural wines that truly resonate with us.
We are particularly keen to introduce you to the new winemakers of tomorrow who work tirelessly to offer us magnificent wines.
